Drum Property Group submitted a major planning application for a £50m development at Stead’s Place, Leith Walk in August 2018.

The proposals are for a mixed-used scheme combining high-quality, affordable housing for local people and post-graduate student accommodation - as well as a hotel, restaurant, café and retail units.. The University of Edinburgh will be the operating partner for the student residences and hotel, and Places for People will own and operate the affordable homes. 

VISION

Our vision is to transform the entire site into a welcome and distinctive destination in its own right, which is set to have a dramatic impact both on the immediate local area and on the wider setting of Leith Walk and its connectivity with the rest of the city. 

Drum Property Group understands the importance of consultation, and the positive impact it can deliver on new developments. The proposals have been comprehensively revised following an extensive consultation programme with the Leith Walk community. This has included five days of public exhibitions, setting up a community liaison group – plus regular update meetings with tenants, local community groups and stakeholders.

The revised proposals reflect the distinctive, independent feel and needs of the local area.  This will include redeveloping the row of red sandstone retail, restaurant and entertainment units facing directly on to Leith Walk, which will include a new live music venue.

We believe that developing purpose built affordable housing and student accommodation on this conveniently located site at Stead’s Place will help alleviate housing pressures in the local area and provide a boost to local businesses. Students and education provide a major boost to inward economic investment in Edinburgh every year. Drum is committed to investing in Edinburgh and we believe that developing at Stead’s Place would make a positive improvement to the local area and deliver managed student accommodation in a highly accessible and sustainable location, responding to the strategic aspirations of both the University and Council.

CONSULTATION 

Public exhibitions outlining plans for the site were held at Out of the Blue Drill Hall, Dalmeny Street on 23rd and 24th March 2018. The second public exhibition was held on the 1st May at the site and again at Out of the Blue on 4th and 5th May 2018.
